Het Colombiaanse Instituut voor Studies voor Ontwikkeling en Vrede (Indepaz) heeft een rapport gepubliceerd waarin een overzicht wordt gegeven van het geweld in Colombia tegen mensenrechtenactivisten en voormalige strijders van de Revolutionaire Strijdkrachten van het Colombiaanse Volksleger (FARC-EP) sinds de ondertekening van de vredesakkoorden in 2016.
Het document, getiteld “Traumatische Post-Agreement”, geeft aan dat er in de afgelopen vier jaar 1.090 sociale leiders zijn vermoord. Het dodelijkste jaar was dat van de inauguratie van het presidentschap van Iván Duque, in 2018, met 298 slachtoffers, terwijl in 2020 het dodental 291 mensen bedraagt. Drieënzestig procent van de moorden werd gepleegd tijdens de regering van president Duque”, aldus een artikel op W-radio dat commentaar geeft op het rapport.
De website voegt toe dat er “1.090 moorden zijn gepleegd in 288 gemeenten in Colombia. Het departement Cauca is het meest getroffen met 264 vermoorde gemeenschapsleiders, gevolgd door Antioquia, waar 140 verdedigers zijn vermoord”.
De meest getroffenen zijn inheemse en boerengemeenschappen. Van het totale aantal moorden in vier jaar tijd waren 294 sociale leiders inheems en 203 waren boeren.
Ook de Hoge Commissaris voor de mensenrechten van de Verenigde Naties, Michelle Bachelet, veroordeelde de toename van het geweld in Colombia, vooral in het lopende jaar 2020.
“Het VN-bureau voor de mensenrechten in Colombia heeft 66 bloedbaden gedocumenteerd, waarbij 255 mensen werden vermoord, in 18 departementen. Bovendien heeft het bureau alleen al in het afgelopen jaar informatie ontvangen over de moord op 120 mensenrechtenleiders”, aldus een bericht op de website van het bureau.
Het team van de Hoge Commissaris voor de mensenrechten wees erop dat deze cijfers een weerspiegeling zijn van de gemelde gevallen, maar vreest dat het werkelijke aantal groter zou kunnen zijn, aangezien de beperkingen als gevolg van de COVID-19-pandemie het moeilijk hebben gemaakt om het werk te doen dat nodig is om het geweld in Colombia te documenteren.

In Colombia 692 Community Leaders Assassinated During Iván Duque’s Government

The Colombian Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz) published a report that compiles a summary of violence in Colombia against human rights defenders and former combatants of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP) since the signing of peace accords in 2016.
Titled “Traumatic Post-Agreement,” the document indicates that 1,090 social leaders were assassinated in the last four years. The deadliest year was that of the ascent to the presidency of Iván Duque, in 2018, with 298 victims, while in 2020 the death toll was 291 people. Sixty-three percent of the homicides were perpetrated during the government of President Duque,” said a W Radio article commenting on the report.
The website adds that “1,090 murders were perpetrated in 288 municipalities of Colombia. The department of Cauca is the most affected with 264 community leaders killed, followed by Antioquia, where 140 defenders have been murdered.”
Those most affected have been Indigenous and peasant communities. Of the total number of homicides in four years, 294 social leaders were indigenous and 203 were peasants.
On the other hand, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, condemned the increase in violence in Colombia, especially during the current year.
“The UN Office for Human Rights in Colombia has documented 66 massacres, in which 255 people were murdered, in 18 departments. In addition, the Office has received information on the murder of 120 human rights leaders in the last year alone,” said a post on the agency’s website.
The team of the High Commissioner for Human Rights pointed out that these figures reflect the reported cases, however they fear that the true number could be greater, as restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic have made it difficult to do the work needed to document violence in Colombia.
